Dozens of people in China infected with a new virus originating from animals, more powerful than the corona virus. A new virus of the Henipavirus family originating from animals (also known as Langya henipavirus, LayV) that can transmit to humans has been found in Shandong and Hubei provinces of China.
So far, the virus has infected 35 people in the two provinces, according to a paper by Chinese and Singaporean scientists published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The pathogen was found in throat swab samples from patients with fever symptoms and a history of recent animal contact.
According to Global Times, Henipavirus can cause severe illness in animals and humans, with a case fatality rate ranging from 40-75%. This is much higher than the mortality rate of the corona virus and currently there is no treatment or vaccine available.
Former US Vice President Mike Pence expressed his outrage over the FBI raid on Trump's house. "I share the deep concern of millions of Americans regarding the unprecedented search of the former President Donald Trump's residence," Pence wrote on Twitter.
Emphasizing that no former president has ever been subjected to a residential search, Pence criticized the US Department of Justice under President Joe Biden for being influenced by partisan conflicts. Russia has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Moscow accuses Ukraine of attacking this largest nuclear power plant in Europe, raising concerns about safety. Zaporizhzhia is in Ukraine but was under Russian control in the early days following the "special military operation."
According to Tass news agency, the Russian delegation to the UN has requested a meeting on August 11 and proposed that International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi make a statement.
Casualties from the oil depot fire caused by lightning in Cuba continue to rise. Cuba's Granma newspaper reported that as of August 9, the Faustino Perez Hospital in Matanzas province had received 67 injured people, including 15 in critical or very serious condition.
Seventeen people, mostly firefighters, are still listed as missing, around 800 people have been evacuated from the area, according to regional officials.
Granma quoted a senior official from the Cubapetroleo oil company explaining that the fire was caused by a system error related to the lightning rod. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero are still overseeing rescue efforts.
