Exchange of World Cultures: Finland Republic and Welcoming a Merry Christmas

Continuing the International Cultural Exchange Series, InterLOG continues to organize a series of international cultural events, with this exchange program featuring Finnish culture with many fascinating aspects.

Finland, a Northern European country, is renowned not only for its breathtaking natural landscapes but also for its unique cultural heritage. Particularly, Finland is also ranked in the Top 10 happiest countries in the world. So, what has helped them maintain this title over the years?

1. Distinctive Features of the Finland Republic

Finland, or the Republic of Finland, is a Northern European country bordered by Sweden, Russia, Norway, and the Gulf of Finland. The capital city Helsinki is also the largest city in the country. With a population of over 5.5 million people (2020), Finland is one of the least densely populated countries in Europe, with a density of only 18 people per square kilometer.

Finland is known as a democratic country with a parliamentary republic system, excelling in areas such as education, quality of life, and democratic freedoms. This country joined the European Union in 1995 and maintains a comprehensive social welfare model.

Finland has two official languages: Finnish, used by about 93% of the population, and Swedish, common in coastal areas like Vaasa and Åland. Additionally, the Sami language, spoken by the Sami people in Lapland, is used by only around 2,000 individuals. Notably, English is also widely spoken in Finland, taught extensively in schools, facilitating easy integration for international students and foreigners.

Finland is a place where you can experience the tranquility of nature and the beauty of traditional culture, from outdoor art performances in the summer to winter activities like snow skiing with friends and family.

Finland is famous for its unique sauna culture, where people relax and enjoy serenity. Sauna bathing is an essential part of life and is often done without clothing. Furthermore, Finns highly value privacy, demonstrated by the custom of guests needing to agree before entering a home and always removing shoes indoors.

In terms of communication, Finns have a direct and honest conversational style, using few embellishments. They respect silence in conversations. Greetings usually involve shaking hands, even between men and women, with cheek kissing being uncommon.

Finnish cuisine mainly consists of meat, fish, potatoes, and pasta, with an increasing trend towards vegetarian food. People typically have two hot meals a day and consume milk even as adults.

According to the World Happiness Report 2023, Finland continues to be honored as the happiest country in the world for the 6th consecutive time. This success stems not only from superior social welfare policies but also from the unique lifestyle of the Finnish people, especially the philosophy of happiness called SISU: Finding happiness in small things, helping you "discover" yourself to overcome all difficulties and challenges.

Sports in Finland are not just about competition but also about joy and community bonding. Unique activities like wife carrying, mosquito hunting, or swamp soccer create a distinct allure. These games not only bring laughter but also stimulate the production of endorphins - a factor that improves mood and creates a sense of happiness.
